Trilokpuri rape case: The Police on Wednesday arrested a 34-year-old man from East Delhi’s Trilokpuri for allegedly raping a six-year-old Dalit girl. Reportedly, the accused and the survivor live in the same neighbourhood.

A case of rape has been registered at the Mayur Vihar police station on the basis of the family's complaint. The accused has been charged under the Indian Penal Code’s Section 376 AB (punishment for rape on a woman under 12 years of age) and Section 6 of the protection of children from sexual offences (POCSO) Act. It adds sections 3(2) (v) of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act as well.
The police said the six-year-old girl is in a critical condition and undergoing treatment at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). They received a call from the minor girl’s family informing them about the incident. The girl was immediately taken for medical examination as her condition deteriorated and doctors confirmed that she had been sexually assaulted.
As per a report by Hindustan Times, the locals had gathered and staged a protest outside the police station, and family members had accused a neighbour of the crime. Shortly after the protest, the accused was arrested in connection with the case. Further investigation is underway.
Similar cases in Delhi
The incident comes on the heels of a similar case of alleged sexual assault on a minor Dalit girl in the national capital earlier this month. On August 1, a nine-year-old girl was allegedly raped, murdered and cremated by a 55-year-old priest and three of his accomplices in the Cantonment area in southwest Delhi. The girl's family alleged in their statements to the police that the four men tried to convince them to cremate the child's body without informing the police as it would "complicate matters". All the four prime accused in the case were arrested after massive protests were staged outside the crematorium, seeking justice for the deceased.
