Paveenut Supolwong, nicknamed "Ammy", is normally a light sleeper according to her parents, but at naptime on Thursday when the killer burst into the nursery and began murdering 22 children, Ammy was fast asleep with the blanket covering her face.

She is the only child to live through the attack in Nong Bua Lamphu, Thailand. In total 37 people died - including the wife and stepson of the attacker - and 24 of the dead are children.

"I'm in shock," said Ammy's mother, Panompai Sithong. "I feel for other families... I'm glad that my kid survived. It's a mixed feeling of sadness and gratitude."

It is unclear how Ammy survived. Her relatives have dubbed her as the miracle baby. She was found awake, curled up next to the bodies of her classmates, who she thought were still asleep. A police officer then covered her face with a cloth and carried her away from all the blood.

The small town of Nong Bua Lamphu is filled with grieving families, and for the first few days, Emmy's grandparents struggled to tell her about the incident. However, Emmy kept asking after her best friend, three-year-old Pattarawut, who was also known as Taching. She also loved the daycare centre and wanted to be just like her teachers.

"Her grandmother finally told her that her school friends had all died, along with her teacher, and the day care centre is closed," her mother told BBC.

"She just wants to go to school every day. We have to keep telling her the school is closed down. She is too young to understand the concept of death." However, she does not yet know the full extent of the tragedy she lived through.

The gunman, who killed himself at his home, was identified as a former officer who was dismissed for drug use and was due in court the day after the killings.
