As the date for the Manipur Legislative Assembly Elections for 2022 approaches, the electoral campaigns have also intensified. It is going to be held on February 28 and the political parties are busy prepping for it. The super cop who took on the drug mafia in the State, Thounaojam Brinda is also going to make her entry as a candidate.
Brinda is popular for the kind of work she has done for the region. She is a "super cop." In 2018, she became famous after she seized drugs worth Rs 27 crore, it was a high-profile case. The same year, she was conferred by the Biren Singh government with a gallantry award.
But in 2020, she returned the award after she had a fall out with Chief Minister Singh, who she alleged was helping the main accused in the high-profile drugs case. Her popularity in the region is massive. She is the daughter-in-law of the man who headed the armed movement against the state. But she chose to serve the Manipur police.

While returning the award in a letter to the CM, she wrote, "...I feel morally inclined that I have not conducted my duty as 'per the wishes' of the Criminal Justice Delivery System of the land. Hence, for the reason cited above, I do not consider myself deserving of the honour bestowed upon me by your good self."
One reason why Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister had to fly down from Delhi to campaign for the BJP candidate in the area. Shah was seen doing door to door campaign against Brinda in the Yaiskul Assembly seat in Imphal East, Manipur.
Brinda is contesting against the incumbent Member of Legislative Assembly from the Bharatiya Janata Party and the current Law Minister of Manipur, Thokchom Satyabrata Singh. She is contesting for Janata Dal (united) JD (U).
No matter how big a minister comes to campaign against her, she hardly seems fazed. Brinda said, "I take it as a compliment that the BJP's sitting Minister needed the Union Home Minister to campaign against me. My fight is against the drug menace and corruption. As a cop, I was not able to do so much for the people. I want to create an impact in the state assembly."
In 2016, she had resigned from service because of alleged discrimination and suspicion for being the daughter-in-law of RK Meghen.
