This Fierce Rap Video About Wearing Hijab Tells It Like It Is

The issue of women’s clothing has been a contested one, especially when it comes to wearing the hijab. A 28-year-old Syrian-American from Flint, Michigan, has written and performed in a defiant and fun video on the nuances of wearing a hijab. Mona Haydar put up the video on Thursday, which also happened to be Muslim Women’s Day.

The video, which shows fierce women clad in hijab, rapping and dancing it out, already has more than a million views on Facebook, and explores what it is like to live in America and wear a hijab.

“Covered up or not don’t ever take us for granted”

“I still rap my hijab, keep swagging my hijab,” sing the ladies in the video.

Haydar tells Buzzfeed News that the video is aimed to lift people’s spirits and bring them together in levity and sweetness.

In light of the current American government’s agenda to demonize and malign the bodies of women, Muslims, and others, like trans people, I’m intentionally putting out this message now to help shift the narrative back to one that is positive and full of love

And of course, nothing can be posted online nowadays without getting trolled. Haydar had her share of haters, trolls, Islamophobes saying all kinds of things to her. She is 8-months pregnant in the video, and has said that she has got a lot of hate for being pregnant in the video, even more than for the song itself.

Haydar said that she wanted the song to be a party. And a party it is!
