The world needs women leaders

Why is it that the world needs women leaders? Well there is no single answer. As the world and the global economy are growing, so is the need for more hands and brains to take it further. At a time like this, not utilizing half of the world’s living resources- doesn’t really make sense. Women today are fully exposed to the outside world- they are educated, socially aware and ready to take on the world as equals.

But, World Economic Forum's recent Gender Parity Report has revealed that out of all the women in the world, only one fifth hold positions in national governments and only 9.4 percent are on the boards of private companies and worse only 20 percent of senior management positions; are held by women globally.

Many different studies including McKinsey studies have revealed that governments, professions and companies with women as active members, have shown substantial growth as compared to the ones without any female representation. What women bring to the table is not just diversity, but a fresh set of outlook towards issues and varied problem-solving skills.

Ambassador Verveer highlights once said, “ are significantly outnumbered in the chambers of parliaments, provincial councils, and more often than not missing from the negotiating tables where conflicts are to be resolved. All too often decisions that affect women, their families, and societies are made without women having a voice.” It is, hence, extremely important to have female representation in bodies that effect their lives.

Keller further suggests that this change cannot simply be bought by will; necessary changes in governmental policies will also be required. Where most people wish to believe that a capable human being, no matter the gender, would eventually rise on top; the truth is that it isn’t just capability or lack of education that is still holding women back, it is centuries of ‘traditional’ practices and notions that need to be broken for us to get ahead.
