K Jaga Jyothi, an executive engineer associated with Telangana's Tribal Welfare Engineering department, has been arrested on charges of corruption. She was arrested after a complaint lodged with the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) accused Jyothi of soliciting a bribe amounting to Rs 84,000 in exchange for an official favour.
Viral Tears and the Phenolphthalein Test
A video showcasing K Jaga Jyothi in tears after being caught has gone viral on social media. The subsequent phenolphthalein test further solidified the allegations. Her right hand fingers tested positive during the test, revealing the presence of the chemical compound.
Phenolphthalein, a crucial tool in catching bribe recipients, undergoes a colour change when it breaks down, turning pink. This chemical transformation occurs when it comes into contact with a mild base. In cases of bribery, when marked bills or documents are handled, traces of the solution stick to the individual's hands, revealing their involvement.
Improper Conduct and Dishonesty
The ACB, in its official statement, declared that K Jaga Jyothi had acted improperly and dishonestly in the execution of her duties, all in pursuit of gaining an undue advantage after the swift recovery of the entire bribe amount of Rs 84,000 from her possession after the arrest. Currently, in custody, the executive engineer is slated to be presented before a court in Hyderabad, where the legal consequences of her actions will be determined.
