Telangana Court Orders Pole Climbing Test For Two Women Rejected For Lineman Job

Telangana High Court told the Transco (Transmission Corporation of Telangana, electricity transmission company of the State) authorities to conduct poll climbing test for two women candidates. The candidates had qualified the written test which is the first step for appointment of junior lineman post.

A division bench of Chief Justice Raghvendra Singh Chauhan and Justice B. Vijaysen Reddy observed that gender discrimination in job appointments will not be permitted at all.

The two women candidates were V. Bharathi and B. Shirisha. These two women, along with six other women filed a written petition in the High Court. They stated their concern that the Transco authorities didn't conduct the poll climbing tests for them, even though they had qualified the written test for junior lineman posts.

However, the Transco authorities later, informed the court that only two out of the eight women candidates had succeeded in the written test. After hearing arguments of both the sides, petitioners and the Transco counsel, a single judge had dismissed the petition of those six women. However, the judge directed the authorities to give the two women who had qualified the written test an opportunity.

The court has directed the power department authorities to conduct the pole climbing test for the petitioners in two weeks and to submit the result to the single bench which is currently hearing the petition.

G Vidya Sagar, who is senior advocate appearing for the company, said that the power utility had mentioned in their advertisements for filling vacancies of lineman that women candidates were not eligible for the posts of lineman. One does why though.
