Tamil film Paava Kadhaigal is Breaking Taboos With Its Narrative. Here's How

Anthology films have gained immense popularity of late. The Tamil cinema has now released an anthology film on Netflix. The film Paava Kadhaigal (Translation: Tales of Sin) aims to point fingers at the taboos which still persist in our society. The film takes an intense look at inter-caste marriage, transgender issues, same-sex love among others.

Here are 10 things you might want to know about Paava Kadhaigal:

1. The film boasts of some of the most talented directors in Tamil cinema. Moreover, the film comprises of four short films with each one having their own director. Sudha Kongara, Vignesh Shivn, Vetrimaaran and Gautham Menon direct Thangam, Love Panna Uttranum, Oor Iravu and Vaanmagal respectively.
2. Paava Kadhaigal has an impressive array of actors who do justice to the film. The cast comprises of Kalidas Jayaram, Shanthanu, Anjali, Kalki Koechlin, Prakash Raj, Sai Pallavi, Simran and Gautham Menon.
3. The underlying concept of all the films is honour killing. However, each film turns the subject in a unique manner.
4.  Sudha Kongara stresses on the emergence of equal relationships in her segment. Her film Thangam tells us the story of a transgender who is shunned by everyone. In addition to that, the film manages to grab your attention by addressing issues like trans-phobia, inter-faith marriage,etc. Besides that, Kalidas Jayaram portrays his transgender character convincingly.
5. Vetrimaaran's film focuses on how a father hates his daughter after she marries a low-caste boy and becomes pregnant. What follows next tells us more about how the father deals with the regressive mindset he has. Prakash Raj and Sai Pallavi play the father-daughter duo remarkably.
6. Vignesh Shivn's Love Panna Uttranum features Kalki Koechlin and Anjali as the leading ladies. Both the actresses play out their parts well by bringing out "same-sex love" through subtle humour.
7. Gautam Menon's film is sure to make you feel restless. His film is shows us what happens to a family in the aftermath of a terrible incident. Interestingly, the director himself plays the leading role behind Simran.
8.  Sudha Kongara shared how moved she was after she read the script of the film. ” I was just sobbing as I was reading it. And after I finished reading it, I took a picture of myself, and I told Shaan, ‘I can’t talk beyond this, and I want to do this.’ That’s how I fell in love with this story”.
9. The film has received an IMDb rating of 8.8/10.
