Writer Tahira Kashyap has reportedly been roped in to direct a film called Sharmaji Ki Beti with two female protagonists. Tahira, who was diagnosed with breast cancer last year, is prepping for her debut directorial venture. Talking about the project in an interview with a leading daily, said, “This is about women, and we are going to keep it at that for now. I don’t want to reveal much about the film, it’s too early. There is no determined time period for when we will start this project. But I am looking to start this at the earliest.”
The woman-centric drama film is reportedly based on two women from different age groups who would try to capture the urban flavours of the society, but also deals with the subject of existence and conflicts. There were rumours that Madhuri Dixit has been roped in, but in an interview with Pinkvilla a source close to the development reasons, “Madhuri Dixit and Saiyami Kher were locked for the two female lead parts. While Madhuri was expected to play her age, Saiyami was essaying the role of a cricketer, who's also a tomboy in real life. The film questions the several prejudices and social perceptions attached to women. But now, we hear that Mads won't be part of the project anymore.”
Ask why and our source adds, “Madhuri had liked the whole idea of the film but she had never officially signed it. In fact, she had verbally told Tanuj she will mostly do it. But the modalities didn't work out. Madhuri is also in talks for another big project so she decided to let this pass. The makers too are now on the lookout for another actress in that space to come on board to play the other protagonist.”
Husband Ayushmann Khurrana took to Twitter on Tuesday to share his excitement about the brand new chapter in Tahira’s career.
“From writing books, plays, directing theatre productions to making a feature film now. So proud of u @tahira_k. The first step towards your dream. You have written a wonderful script and you are backed by the most credible people,” he tweeted.

A mother of two, Tahira also shared the news. “Dreams do come true. Delighted to open my innings as a director on a script that’s very dear to me. It's been a long journey of patience & waiting. The title & the cast will be revealed soon!” she wrote.
In an interview with Mumbai Mirror, Tahira revealed, “I am delighted to be working with such incredible partners to bring a take on urban existence to the big screen. If feels surreal that something I had dreamt of for the longest time, is finally happening. I’ve been writing screenplays for five years. It wasn’t an easy ride for me. I’m glad that Ellipsis believed in me, and together with T-series, has given me a platform to breathe life into my script. I am truly excited about this new phase in my life and career.”
