An 18-year-old girl has lodged a rape complaint against table tennis player Soumyajit Ghosh. She filed an FIR against Ghosh in West Bengal's Barasat women's police station on Wednesday (March 21).
Ghosh, who has represented India at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics, denied the allegation saying, “She was blackmailing me, forcing and mentally torturing me with threats and all,” India Today reported.
According to the news platform, the complainant said that the 24-year-old player had promised to marry her, but later refused.

The Arjuna Awardee is currently in Germany, prepping for the Commonwealth Games (CWG). The event is slated to begin in Australia on April 4.
According to the girl, it all started after they both met via social media three years ago, and started dating. They had met at Ghosh‘s flat in Kolkata and in Siliguri. She claimed that Ghosh had committed to marry her but then backed away
Ghosh, on the other hand, said that she was his girlfriend. He added, "It's a fake allegation (rape). Actually we met a few years ago on Facebook, around March 2015 and we were together for quite some time, our families knew about it and we were supposed to get married. In fact, when I went to receive the Arjuna Award (in 2016), she and her mom were with me then. Suddenly she started opposing my career and travelling and it started to fall apart. Then, she was blackmailing me, forcing and mentally torturing me with threats and all.”

“For the past one year, she has been taking money from me. I have receipts of more than Rs 1 lakh that I have paid her. I also have the documents to prove that I have borne the expenditure of medical treatment of one of her relatives at a private hospital in Kolkata,” he was quoted.
Meanwhile, the complaint implied that the girl had got pregnant and had to undergo an abortion. She alleged that she took the relationship further because he promised to marry her after she turned 18
“He is avoiding my daughter now and so we have no other alternative but to go to the police,” the girl’s father told TOI.
Investigation is on in the case.
