Taapsee Pannu-starrer Thappad has now bagged two nominations at the 14th Asian Film Awards. Thappad with its hard-hitting content was well received by the audience worldwide and triggered a conversation on domestic violence among its viewers. Now, at Asian Film Awards in Busan, South Korea it has been nominated in the 'Best Film' and 'Best Editing' categories and is contending with South Korean award-winning film Parasite. Thappad is one among the 39 films from 11 countries which have been nominated for the awards.
Anubhav Sinha, the director of the film informed, “When I was making Thappad, it didn’t occur to me that it will have such a universal appeal. It only came to my notice when I connected with my non-Indian friends, who hail from countries like Germany, Taiwan, Malaysia and America. They saw the film and connected with it," TOI reported.
In June, Pannu emerged as the highest-grossing actress of the Hindi film industry in the last year, Zoom TV reported. Four of Pannu's movies Badla, Mission Mangal, Game Over, Saand Ki Aankh were released in 2019 and Thappad, the biggest and most talked-about film of her career was released in March this year, collectively made Rs 352 crore at the box-office.
Sinha also shared a tweet, “Look at the company THAPPAD is in. Yayyyy!!!”

Thappad has a social message
Talking about the issue of domestic violence which the film addresses the Sinha added, “I was actually planning to base the backdrop of the movie in a non-metro but the women members of my team informed me that the issue is prevalent in cities and upper middle-class families too.”
Further sharing his excitement, the director said, “With the attention Thappad is getting internationally, one can note that it (domestic violence) is not just a problem associated with India, but the world over.”
Talking about Thappad, Pannu earlier commented that it only had a two-week run in the theatres due to the nationwide lockdown and expressed, “I knew people would have polarised reactions. I never wanted to change people. I just wanted to start a discussion. That has been my aim from Pink to Thappad,” The New Indian Express had reported. Later, the film got an OTT release.
The movie recently won five awards at Kyoorius Advertising Awards 2020. The movie was recently a part of the ‘World’s Most Reported Trailer’ Campaign and won five prestigious awards namely ‘Direct Response Film’, ‘Innovation in a digital marketing communication’, ‘Film advertising interactive films’, ‘Innovative use to social media’ and ‘PSA press advertising award’, reports Mid-day.
