Amidst the Supreme Court hearing petitions to legalise same-sex marriages in the country, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’s Women’s Wing claimed on Saturday that homosexuality is a disorder and will lead to a rise in same-sex marriages if it is legalised. The statement was based on a poll of 318 medical professionals from eight different paths of treatment, from modern scientific medicine to Ayurveda.

A senior functionary of the RSS, Samwardhini Nyas, told the Press Trust of India that nearly 70 percent of doctors and allied medical professionals stated homosexuality to be a disorder, and 83 percent confirmed the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases in homosexual relationships.

Survey On Homosexuality Mental Illness

RSS claimed that based on the survey, they observe that the decision to legalise same-sex marriages may promote more disorder in society rather than providing a cure to patients and bringing them back to normalcy. The RSS body added that counselling was the better option to cure patients of such psychological disorders.

The survey also recommended that public opinion be taken into consideration before taking any decision on the legalisation of same-sex marriage.

The centre and several religious bodies have opposed the recognition of same-sex marriages, and some have considered it "harmful for human existence."

Last week, a religious Hindu organisation wrote to the Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, claiming that homosexual unions are "harmful for human existence" and suggesting a "register" to protect and ensure the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community.

The RSS has earlier stated that it considers marriage "sanskar" in Hindu life, which is neither for enjoyment nor for contract but for social good.

The centre has claimed that same-sex marriage is against the cultural and traditional understanding of marriage. It also considered same-sex relationships an "urban elitist concept."

Meanwhile, the Indian Psychiatric Society (IPS) stated that homosexuality is not a mental illness and that no scientific evidence backs the claim that sexual orientation can be changed through treatments. The American Psychiatric Association also issued a resolution stating that homosexuality is not a mental illness or disease.
