Authorities rushed to the spot but the girl had passed away. The elderly woman was in a sickly condition and administered first aid, following which she was taken to hospital. The deceased girl has been identified as one Manju, and her grandmother as Sukhi.

The Rajasthan incident has sent shockwaves on social media with many claiming the tragedy was preventable, had adequate water resources been in supply around the state.

Several places in Rajasthan are facing water crises with the pandemic and lockdown upsetting supplies. A report from a village in Bikaner noted there weren't enough tubewells for use. This shortage is being exacerbated by the summer heat.

Union Minister for Environment and Information Prakash Javadekar took to Twitter to slam the ruling Congress government in Rajasthan over the dehydration incident. "The death of a girl child due to non-availability of drinking water for 9 hours is a very shameful incident. Rajasthan government is responsible for this. Why are Sonia, Rahul, Priyanka silent now?" he questioned.
