Long COVID Symptoms: A study, published on Thursday, analysing the symptoms of Long COVID revealed that there are more than 200. These symptoms can affect 10 organ systems.
The study, published in the journal EClinicalMedicine, created a web-based survey that was designed to gather the data on the symptom profile of Long COVID-19. The data was gathered from over 3,762 eligible participants from 56 countries.
Out of the total, 3,608 (96 per cent) reported the symptoms lasted more than 90 days. Further, 2,454 (65 per cent) people experienced symptoms for at least 180 days. And out of the total, only 233 had recovered from the symptoms.
According to the data, there were over 200 symptoms out of which 66 were tracked for seven months. The most common functions were cognitive dysfunction, brain fog, fatigue, post-exertional malaise (worsening of symptoms after physical or mental exertion).
Other symptoms included memory loss, blurred vision, diarrhoea, sexual dysfunction, heart palpitations, visual hallucinations, tremors, itchy skin, changes to the menstrual cycle, and tinnitus.
Athena Akrami, a neuroscientist at University College London and a senior author of the study, said, "While there has been a lot of public discussion around long COVID, there are few systematic studies investigating this population."
Akrami added, "Relatively little is known about its range of symptoms, and their progression over time, the severity, and expected clinical course (longevity), its impact on daily functioning, and expected to return to baseline health."
She also said, "For the first time this study shines a light on the vast spectrum of symptoms, particularly neurological, prevalent and persistent in patients with long COVID." Akrami also added that over 85 per cent of respondents experienced memory and cognitive dysfunction.
The researchers acknowledged several limitations to the study.
Long COVID is identified as the prolongment of the symptoms in a person who has been affected with COVID-19 at some point.
