Four students of Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology, Delhi, won this year's Google Women Tech-makers Scholarship. Anannya Uberoi, Katyayani Singh, Simran Saxena and Vahini Ummalaneni bagged the Google Anita Borg Scholarship as it was initially called.
The scholarship is a medium to motivate girls to perform excellently and acquire leadership roles in computing and technology. Google chose the girls on the basis of their academic and leadership qualities.
It had also invited all selected participants to the Google Scholars’ Retreat, held in Seoul earlier this year.
Apart from the four IIIT-D students, 15 others from various institutes from around the country also won the scholarship. Four students from different IITs also bagged the scholarship. They are Aashaka Shah from IIT Roorkee, Akrati Saxena from IIT Ropar, Alekhya Reddy from IIT Madras and Antara Ganguly from IIT Bombay.

Uberoi is a pre-final year B.Tech (CSE) student who invented a device—‘SafeFirst’ for women’s safety. This device allows the distressed to send location alerts to emergency outstanding contacts. Singh is a pre-final year B Tech (CSE) student but also wants to study Human Computer Interaction and Human-Centred Design. She is keen to use tech to solve real world problems. In fact, she interned at the UE-HCI Lab, IIT-Guwahati. And she designed augmented reality-based kinaesthetic learning tools for children with special needs.
Saxena is already a BTech (Honors) graduate in CSE. She is now studying M.Tech and her thesis is on Privacy, Security and Crowdsourcing.

Ummalaneni is not just the winner of Google Women scholarship, she is also IIIT-D’s first ECE student to receive it. And now she wants to explore in radars, signal and image processing.
