Sonia Gandhi Won't Celebrate Her Birthday This Year In View Of Farmers’ Protests, COVID-19 Situation: Report

Congress Interim President Sonia Gandhi has decided not to celebrate her birthday on December 9 this year, in support of the ongoing farmers' protest against the farm laws and COVID-19 situation in India. Gandhi is turning 74 this year.

"Farmers are on the street-facing the harsh climate and brutal crackdown from the Government, Congress leaders instead of celebrations should strengthen the efforts to provide relief to all those who are suffering and extend support to fighting Anndatas," Gandhi had said in a meeting with PCC Presidents of the states, according to a report by Free Press Journal.

Reportedly, she did not celebrate her birthday last year as well in protest of the rising incidents of rape in various parts of the country.

Gandhi is currently in Goa as advised by her doctor due to an aggravated chest infection. Doctors told her to stay away from Delhi amidst heavy pollution and poor air quality. She is accompanied by her son and former Congress president Rahul Gandhi.

Sonia Gandhi stepped down from her post as the Congress president in 2017 as Rahul Gandhi officially took over the position. He then publicly resigned as president last year and Sonia Gandhi decided to remain as party's interim president. She has been the longest-serving president of the party, being elected to the post in 1998. The leader, due to her ethnicity had faced numerous challenges in the initial days. "It is here, in my country- India. It is in its earth that the blood of my loved ones is mingled. It is here that I will breathe my last. And it is here, that my ashes will mingle with those of my loved ones. The Prime Minister can sink to whichever depths he wishes to challenge my integrity. But he cannot take the truth away from the commitment and my love for India," she had said in 2016 when questions were raised about her identity.

Sonia Gandhi has also written a book titled Two Alone, Two Together.
