Wrestler Sonam Malik on Thursday (Sept 7) bagged the gold medal at the Cadet World Wrestling Championship in Athens, Greece. Another Indian, Neelam, took home a bronze in the 43kg category.

The 15-year-old clinched the feat on the fourth day of the championship. Her Opponent, Sena Nagamoto, had a hard time facing off the power-packed wrestler and lost by a margin of 3-1.
The World Cadet Championship kicked off on September 3 and will be on till September 10.

Sonam was competing in the 56kg category. In the final against Japanese Sena Nagamoto, Sonam took an early first round lead with 2-0. In the second round, she added another point to win the match.
Neelam, on her part, beat Roxana Alexandra of Romania 6-4 to clinch the bronze medal.

India is hoping more gold from the grappler Anshu, who is set to fight it out against Naomi Ruike (Japan) in the 60-kg weight category. Four other wrestlers -- Simran, Manisha, Minakshi, Karuna -- are in the fight for Bronze Medal in different weight categories.
Earlier, Anshu defeated Romania Wrestler Capezan in the preliminary round. In the quarterfinal, she defeated Russia’s Parokhina. In the next round, she won over Hungary’s Bihar to make it to the final.

The national Iranian cadet Greco-Roman wrestling team has been announced as the overall vice-champion of the 2017 Cadet World Championships.
