The widow of Army Sgt. La David Johnson, one of four soldiers killed earlier this month in an ambush in Niger, has spoken about a controversial phone call she had with President Donald Trump.
She said that she heard him stumbling, trying to remember her husband’s name. “That’s what hurt me the most, because if my husband is out here fighting for our country and he risked his life for our country, why can’t you remember his name?” she said on the show Good Morning America.
Myeshia Johnson had two children with La David, and is pregnant with her third child. Myeshia said that US Representative Frederica Wilson’s recollection of the call was absolutely correct. The congresswoman who is a family friend had gone on record last week to reveal what had happened on the call.
Wilson said that Trump told Myeshia, “Well I guess you know he knew what he was signing up for, but it still hurts."
Trump quickly defended himself on Twitter. He posted, “I had a very respectful conversation with the widow of Sgt. La David Johnson, and spoke his name from beginning, without hesitation!”
Not allowed to see body
Myeshia has also said that she has not been told about the circumstances surrounding her husband’s death. She hasn’t even been allowed to view his body.
“They won’t show me a finger, a hand. I know my husband’s body from head to toe, and they won’t let me see anything. I don’t know what’s in that box,” she said. “It could be empty, for all I know. She has been trying to find out more details since October 4th.
“I want the world to know how great of a soldier my husband was and a loving and caring father and husband he was to our family," she said.
