It’s a story based on the civil war era and stars Dunst, Nicole Kidman, Elle Fanning and Colin Farrell. Sophia is the daughter of legendary filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola.

Coppola's win at the Cannes is significant because the winners in this category have been male directors so far.

She has made history by becoming the second filmmaker to achieve the best director award. The last woman to win Best Director was Soviet filmmaker Yuliya Solntseva in 1961 for her movie “The Chronicle of Flaming Years.”

Coppola has spent her career as a scriptwriter and director. She has also worked as an actress in the movie The Godfather: Part III after which she preferred to work behind the cameras. The Virgin Suicides starring Kirsten Dunst was her directorial debut in the year 1999. It was in the year 2004 when a breakthrough came in Sophia’s life as a filmmaker when her drama Lost in Translation starring, Scarlett Johansson was nominated for The Oscars and finally won awards in three catgeories: Best Director, Best Film and Best Screenplay.

It was after a long gap that a female director had won a prize at the Cannes Film Festival, this year. The Beguiled is yet to hit the theatres domestically on June 30. In the movie, Nicole Kidman, who had won the 70th Anniversary Prize, plays the role of a headmistress of a girls’ school of 1864 in Virginia.
