Two sisters belonging to Tamil Nadu’s Trichy district died by suicide on Tuesday, June 6, after their parents allegedly opposed their inter-faith relationships.
The deceased are from Ayanpudhupatti village of Manapparai taluk and used to work in a garment factory in Kangeyam of Tiruppur district, where they reportedly met and fell in love with two Muslim brothers, also fellow employees, a few years ago.
Sisters in inter-faith relationship die by suicide
According to a Times of India report, the sisters had come home Sunday to attend a temple festival in their village. During their recent visit home, their mother Akilandeshwari noticed the sisters were speaking to the men on the phone and further warned the duo. The women’s parents opposed their relationships and asked them to stop seeing the men.
Around 7.30 am on Tuesday morning, the sisters left their house and did not come back. Later, the parents and local residents found them dead in a well less than half a kilometre from the house.
Police said local cattle herders found two mobile phones by a well near the home and found one body floating in the water. “Local police and fire rescue services were immediately informed, and we retrieved the bodies of the sisters from the well,” the officer said.
The police and fire safety personnel rushed to the spot to recover the bodies and sent them to the Manapparai Government Hospital for post-mortem. The police have registered a case under section 174 (enquire and report on suicide) of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) and initiated an investigation, reports The News Minute.
