sister gifts kidney to brother: A brother-sister duo has proved the true essence of Raksha Bandhan. Just ahead of the festival, Dr Sujata Dev has gifted her kidney to her brother Sandeep Kumar who works as an Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer.
Kumar is overwhelmed with this gesture. In an interview with TOI, he said that he is grateful to his sister. "Usually brothers give gifts to sisters on Raksha Bandhan. But Sujata gave me a gift of life with her kidney.", he said.
Kumar is posted as principal income tax commissioner at Lucknow whereas Dr Dev is a gynaecologist and a professor at the Medical College in Lucknow.
The sister said that her elder brother is everything for her adding that she was aware of the kidney donation and what one must keep in mind while donating one's kidney. She is elated at the fact that she is able to give a new lease of life to her brother.
Thanks to his sister, Kumar underwent a kidney transplant at the Institute of Kidney Disease and Research Centre (IKDRC) in Ahmedabad on August 14. Kumar is currently recuperating and will get discharged soon.
In 2013 also he underwent a kidney transplant. At that time, the donation was from a brain-dead patient from Surat. Post that, he became actively involved in sensitizing the masses about cadaver donation in Gujarat. At present, he is also the Vice-President of Donate Life, a Surat-based NGO that works for organ donation awareness.
In 2017, the then 48-year-old Vandana Chandra had donated one of her kidneys to her brother following which his transplant was successfully done at the Apollo Hospital, New Delhi. She also urged everyone to register for organ donation. There is nothing more important than saving the life of a human, she believes.
Such examples also reflect the true spirt of Raksha Bandhan. They also break the stereotype that the responsibility of protecting sisters lies only on brothers. Read more on this heart-warming story here.
