Featuring Sima Taparia, the controversial show Indian Matchmaking is coming back with its second season. Taparia was also recently seen on the ongoing season of the reality show Bigg Boss.
The first season of the Emmy-nominated show Indian Matchmaking aired on Netflix in July 2020. It was an eight-episode show that had the matchmaker from Mumbai, Sima Taparia meeting individuals and setting up dates for marriages.
In the show, Taparia used to meet the individuals along with their families in India and abroad who are looking for an arranged marriage and get to know about their likes and dislikes and moreover what they are looking for in a partner.
After this Taparia, very similar to the traditional process of matchmaking, would go through the album full of eligible candidates and shortlist a few for the individual. Sometimes, she would also consult an astrologist and other matchmakers during a match.
Some of the families in the show seemed open-minded but many were casteist, racist and were reinforcing classist stereotypes. The show was criticised for the same. Though some viewers justify the approaches of the show stating that just like a movie which is a depiction of society, the show, too, is a depiction of what still goes around the Indian scenario of matchmaking.
In a previous interview, Sima Taparia had said, "The idea of arranged marriages has also evolved. Gone are the days when parents would find matches and marry their children to suitable partners. These days children also play an active part in the process of matchmaking. And sometimes, they feel they need some extra guidance and help."
In the show Bigg Boss, Sima Taparia entered as a guest to interact with the participants. Her interaction with Urfi Javed and Zeeshan Khan surfaced on the internet. In the video, Javed is seen telling Taparia to find a match for her outside the house.
