Noida shooting range to be renamed after late Chandro Tomar

Tomar was 60-plus when she picked up the gun for the first time but went on to win more than 30 national championships for veterans. Her feats ultimately inspired the biopic Saand ki Aankh. The film, directed by Tushar Hiranandani, chronicles the story of India’s oldest sharpshooters, who began the sport in their fifties. She and her sister-in-law, Prakashi Tomar, fought patriarchy to make a name for themselves in the world of shooting.

Tomar is survived by six children and 15 grandchildren. She took part in several competitions along with Prakashi Tomar, also believed to be one of the oldest woman sharpshooters in the world. The sisters had been practising the sport for years and encouraging young shooters. Many girls took to shooting in Baghpat, Meerut and adjoining areas of western Uttar Pradesh inspired by them. Tomar was also presented with the Stri Shakti Sanman by the President of India. Two years back, Dadi had in an interview with SheThePeople.TV said, "Tann Buddha hota hai, mann nahi hota (My Body might fail, but my Mind is resilient). I believe this is the essence of my life and I have tried to share the same zeal with Saand Ki Aankh crew."
