Congress leader, Sheila Dikshit, who was the Chief Minister of Delhi for three terms, passed away at 3.55 pm on Saturday, July 20. She was 81 years old. The former chief was admitted to Fortis Escorts Heart Institute in Delhi a critical state on Friday and had to be put on a ventilator. She passed away from cardiac condition called arrhythmia.
Dixit underwent a heart surgery in France last year and was under the supervision of Dr Ashok Seth, Chairman of Fortis Escorts Heart institute. He had advised Dikshit to undergo the heart surgery at University Hospital in Lille, France by Dr Thomas Modine.
In November 2012, she had an angioplasty treatment and was recently diagnosed of some infection a while ago.
Dignitaries across the board mourned the death of the politician who had also been a parliamentarian. Prime Minister Modi tweeted, "Deeply saddened by the demise of Sheila Dikshit Ji. Blessed with a warm and affable personality, she made a noteworthy contribution to Delhi’s development. Condolences to her family and supporters. Om Shanti." Former CM of Jammu And Kashmir, Omar Abdullah tweeted as well, “Just heard about the tragic demise of @SheilaDikshit ji. What terrible terrible news. I’ve always known her as a very warm & affectionate lady. She did wonders for Delhi as CM & will be greatly missed by all who knew her. May her soul rest in peace.”

Current CM of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal and political rival of Dikshit also expressed his sorrow on his death by saying, ‘Just now got to know about the extremely terrible news about the passing away of Mrs Sheila Dikshit ji. Dikshit was Member of Parliament from the Kannauj constituency from 1984-1989 apart from serving as a Union Minister from 1986-1989.
From 1998 to 2003, she was an elected representative from Gole Market constituency of Delhi and in 2008 she won the parliamentary seat from New Delhi constituency.
“In each of these elections, she always started her campaign with a walk through her old Gole Market seats, where she would meet with her voters. Her connect with the people of Delhi was unparalleled,” said a Congress leader, News 18 reported.
“She brought in reforms to the power sector, a series of social security schemes and also greatly enhanced the city’s infrastructure during her tenure,” said a former principal secretary in Dikshit’s cabinet.
In January 2019, she became the President of the Delhi Congress’s state unit just before the Lok Sabha Election 2019 in which she contested unsuccessfully from North East Delhi constituency.
