Sunanda Pushkar and Shashi Tharoor reportedly met in October 2009 at a party organised by billionaire Sunny Varkey. They tied the knot in 2010 in Tharoor's ancestral home in Kerala's Elavanchery. This was the third marriage for both of them.
Sunanda Pushkar Death Case
Sunanda Pushkar was 51 years old when was found mysteriously dead in a hotel room in Delhi on this day ten years ago. Shashi Tharoor and she were staying there as their residence was being renovated. Doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) stated that Pushkar's cause of death was unnatural and gave a preliminary autopsy report that revealed injury marks on her body.
Following this, Tharoor was booked for abetment of suicide and several other criminal charges by the Delhi police. Then in 2015, Delhi police filed an FIR stating that Pushkar was murdered, following information from Pushkar's house help who stated that the couple argued only a few days before she was found dead.
In May 2018, Tharoor was charged under Section 498-A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Tharoor denied these charges saying they were "preposterous and motivated". Later, in August 2021. a trial court quashed the charges against Tharoor stating that there was “no material against him”.
The court had said, “There is nothing, even prima facie, to suggest that there was any wilful conduct on the part of the accused (Tharoor) of such a nature as was likely to drive Pushkar to commit suicide or to cause injury or danger to life, limb or health."
