Shahdara Case: Two FIR Against People Spreading Misinformation By Delhi Police

The Delhi Police have registered two First Information Reports (FIR) against people for spreading misinformation on the Shahdara case, where a 20-year-old woman was allegedly gangraped and paraded in the locality by women and men. So far, eleven people have been arrested including nine women.

On January 31, the Delhi Police took to Twitter to negate the misinformation being spread on social media by individuals. They posted on their official account, "Shahdara Case: 2 FIRs registered at VivekVihar PS against those spreading misinformation. Other violators are being identified. We appeal again not to spread misleading facts #DelhiPolice adopts a policy of zero tolerance in crimes against women."

This information and appeal came after hours of Delhi Police posting a video on its Twitter feed urging the same. The DCP Shahdara R Sathiyasundaram in the video said that Delhi Police people have just met the survivor and she is safe.

They shared the video with the caption, "In Shahdara kidnapping & sexual violence case, #DelhiPolice appeals everyone not to reveal the identity of the victim (survivor) and spread misleading facts. Necessary action is taken by identifying those who have spread rumours in this matter."

The DCP added, "There are rumours & false info on social media, stating the survivor's identity, suicide allegations & giving a communal angle, in Kasturba Nagar sexual violence case. Survivor is safe; legal action underway against those spreading rumours."

Shahdara Gangrape Assault Case

On January 27, a disturbing video was shared by the Delhi Commission for Women Chairperson, Swati Maliwal, on Twitter. In that video, a 20-year-old girl was shown being paraded and beaten at a locality in Delhi by women. Maliwal alleged that the survivor's hair was cut and her face blackened. She also said that the survivor was allegedly gangraped at a house with women in it. Allegedly, the women were cheering and inciting the three men involved in the gangrape.

This incident took place at an east Delhi locality. According to Maliwal's post, the accused are illegal liquor sellers. She added that the woman was allegedly kidnapped from her home and taken to the house in Kasturba Nagar, where the alleged incident took place. Read more about the case here.
