  1. She is the only woman to have served as the House Speaker and to date is the highest-ranking female politician in American history
  2. Pelosi was elected Speaker of the House for the 110th and 111th Congresses.
  3. India remains embedded in Pelosi's political history during her travel to Dharamsala. In 2008, she grabbed the headlines in India when she criticised China's way of handling Tibet. While addressing a large gathering in Dharamsala, she was quoted as saying, "The situation in Tibet is a challenge to the conscience of the world."
  4. In 2001, Pelosi was elected the House Minority Whip, second-in-command to Minority Leader Dick Gephardt of Missouri. She was the first woman in U.S. history to hold that post.
  5. Pelosi is Italian-American and was born Nancy Patricia D'Alesandro in Baltimore, Maryland
  6. As a young girl Pelosi attended John F. Kennedy's inaugural address as President in January 1961.
  7. Pelosi opposed U.S. intervention in the 1991 Gulf War
