highest-ranking female politician in American history.
- She is the only woman to have served as the House Speaker and to date is the highest-ranking female politician in American history
- Pelosi was elected Speaker of the House for the 110th and 111th Congresses.
- India remains embedded in Pelosi's political history during her travel to Dharamsala. In 2008, she grabbed the headlines in India when she criticised China's way of handling Tibet. While addressing a large gathering in Dharamsala, she was quoted as saying, "The situation in Tibet is a challenge to the conscience of the world."
- In 2001, Pelosi was elected the House Minority Whip, second-in-command to Minority Leader Dick Gephardt of Missouri. She was the first woman in U.S. history to hold that post.
- Pelosi is Italian-American and was born Nancy Patricia D'Alesandro in Baltimore, Maryland
- As a young girl Pelosi attended John F. Kennedy's inaugural address as President in January 1961.
