Serena Williams in WTA: The ace tennis player defeated her opponent Lisa Pigato, 17-year-old, in the opening round of the WTA tournament, Parma on May 17.
Williams quite easily brushed aside the challenge of a local teenager with a score of 6-3, 6-2 in the first meeting. After her premature exit from the Italian Open, this is her first championship which she entered with a wild card. Her last victory was beating Simona Halep in the Australian Open quarterfinals in February.
Williams has had a very successful career where she had already won five Grand Slams even before Pigato started with her career. However, Williams made a sluggish start as Pigato came up with three glorious winners to defeat the Grand Slam champion in the first game.
Williams said on her victory, "I'm just starting to feel more comfortable. I've always felt super comfortable on the clay and this year has been a little more difficult than normal."
Nevertheless, Williams picked up and dropped just five more points on her serve, firing down six aces that made Pigato's win difficult.
Williams is still one Grand Slam title away from matching the Australian great Margaret Court's record of 24 major trophies.
Williams Praised Lisa Pigato
Williams was amazed to find Pigato, who made her WTA debut this year, to be only 17-year-old for she played very well for her age and "handled the moment well". She believes that Pigato's future is very bright.
"She told me she was only 17. Her future is super-bright. She handled the moment well, so I look forward to cheering for her in the future."
As soon as the match ended, Pigato asked Williams for a selfie with her and engaged in a fan moment with her opponent. Williams found the act "very cool and gutsy."
Pigato, who possesses a world rank of 572, won the girls' doubles title French Open with Eleonora Alvisi in 2020.
