Sania Mirza and Barbora Strycova.

Sania Mirza might have disappointed her fans by not winning a medal at the Rio Olympics, but she lived up to her reputation and the hopes of her fans by winning the WTA doubles at Cincinnati with her new partner, Barbora Strycova.

Mirza and Strycova beat Mirza's former partner Martina Hingis and Coco Vandeweghe by 7-5, 6-4 on Sunday in the finals.

Hingis seemed confident in Cincinnati after winning the Olympics silver for Switzerland with Timea Bacsinszky in Rio de Janeiro. However the win on Sunday looked smooth for Mirza and Strycova as Hingis and American Vandeweghe saw a 5-1 lead in the opening set quickly vanish, and Mirza and Strycova hung in during the second to finally score a victory.

In an interview quoted by FirstPost, Mirza said that it seemed quite weird at first to battle with her former partner for the top rank. Commenting on her new partner, she said: "The biggest quality we both have that we discovered together, is that we both fight no matter what the score is. During the whole week when we were down we were just fighting. That's how we felt today."

Mirza might have ended her partnership with Hingis but we will see them together when they play in October's year-end WTA Tour Championships in Singapore.
