Sania Mirza exhibit a full-power start at bthe first grand slam of the year- the Australian Open 2015. She’s looking strong in her doubles turf, as she teamed up with Su-Hsieh of Taiwan for the slam, and the pair just claimed their first victim.

The Indo-Taiwanese pair mercilessly crushed Maria Irigoyen of Argentina and Romina Oprandi of Switzerland in straight sets 6-2, 6-0, in this first round encounter. The doubles leg kicked off for Sania-Su on day 3, as they met their first opponents on court 8. The Indo-Taiwanese pair hit 23 winners compared to a mere eight by their opponents.

Sania, the top ranked Indian player, has now been pulled up to world No. 5, after a crackling start to the 2015 season, following her first WTA win of this season with Bethanie-Mattek-Sands at the WTA Apia International.  This is the all-time highest rank in her career that she had also achieved once last year in July, before sinking to No. 9 at the end of the year.

“Being in top-five of the world in nay field feels amazing and it’s wonderful to have achieved my career-best rank this week. But if I stay away from injuries, I feel I could go further in the coming months,” Sania told PTI, from Melbourne.
