The Pakistan Cricket Board announced on September 15 that Saleema Imtiaz has been nominated as for the International Cricket Council's Panel of Development Umpires. She has broken barriers and made history as the country's first woman to achieve this prestigious role. Saleema has officiated in 22 T20Is -- 16 as on-field umpire and six as TV umpire. She will now officiate in women's bilateral international matches and ICC women's competitions.
Saleema Imtiaz's Pathbreaking Career
Speaking to the PCB after her historic achievement, Saleema said, "This is not just a personal achievement, but a victory for every female cricketer and umpire in Pakistan. I hope my success will inspire more women to pursue their passion and leave a mark on the sport."
Saleema's passion for cricket stemmed at a young age, when she played in her mohalla with friends. She took up umpiring in 2006 and even inspired her daughter, Kainat to take up the sport. Kainat Imtiaz is a celebrated cricketer who has played 19 ODIs and 21 T20Is.
The mother-daughter duo is now making significant strides in the sport. "Kainat is fulfilling my dream," Saleema told the PCB. "My dream was to represent Pakistan. Apart from being a good daughter, she is also a good cricketer. I get inspired by her as she is so energetic."

As we celebrate Saleema Imtiaz becoming Pakistan's first woman umpire on the ICC International Development Panel, let's recall the journey of the mother-daughter duo 🗣️@kainatimtiaz16 pic.twitter.com/TfutvumFMH
In 2022, Saleema was part of an important all-female upmires' panel at the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). She debuted in the group-stage at the India vs Sri Lanka match at the Sylhet Outer Cricket Stadium. Kainat told the PCB how her mother mentored her in her career.
“I look forward to being like my mom and translating my passion for cricket into something which I can return to my country,” Kainat expressed. "Growing up, there was a lot of interest in cricket in my house as both my parents are sports instructors. I am very fortunate to have mentors in them at home.”
Kainat has also played in tournaments that Saleema was umpiring. "Such games put more pressure on both of us. I am not certain about the future and whether I will take up umpiring as a profession, but I am very sure that I want to serve Pakistan as much as possible,” Kainat said.
