Olympic bronze medallist Sakshi Malik has secured a place in the 2018 Commonwealth Games (CWG). She would be competing in the 62kg weight category. However, star wrestler Geeta Phogat has missed the chance.
On Saturday (Dec 30), Malik secured a spot in the Indian women's wrestling squad for next year's Commonwealth Games and Asian Championships. Pooja Dhanda, who defeated Geeta Phogat, also qualified in the trials for the 57 kg division.
Other than Malik, Vinesh Phogat (50kg), Babita Kumari (54kg), Divya Karan (68 kg) and Kiran (76kg) from the Indian squad have qualified at the Sports Authority of India Training Centre.
The 2018 Commonwealth Games is scheduled be held in the Australian city of Gold Coast between April 4 and 15
Also, the 2018 Senior Asian Wrestling Championship is to be held in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

The silver medallist at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, and the bronze medal winner at the 2015 Asian Wrestling Championships in Doha, Malik had an overall easy year. She represented 'Colors Delhi Sultans' in the second edition of the Pro Wrestling League held in January 2017. Malik has also been featured in the Women's Day campaign called as #EveryWomanStrong for her sponsor JSW Group.
Wrestler Sakshi Malik tied the knot with fellow wrestler Satyawart Kadian in Rohtak on April 2. The wedding ceremony was grand and attended by many well-known personalities, including Sushil Kumar, fellow wrestler and medallist of the 2008 Beijing and 2012 London Olympics.
Malik made the cut for the selection trial at STC, Lucknow.
