Safety Check: Delhi Police Plans QR System To Track Women’s Rides

India's capital is infamous for crimes against women. To tackle these crimes, the Delhi Police has announced yet another initiative. They are going to incorporate a Quick Response (QR) code to monitor mobile Apps for taxis, auto-rickshaws and public transportation, especially for women travellers. The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways shared this information at a national conference on 'Safer and convenient taxi operations in India' recently.

The QR code will focus on generating information about cabs travelling with women passengers in them so that in any case of distress, they can be quickly found.

“Post the Nirbhaya incident, most of the women in the capital feel insecure using public transport, especially in the late hours. Even the metro rail has become too overcrowded, forcing people to use private vehicles. The main aim of the QR code, which will be monitored at a control room, is to improve security for women using public transportation, including cabs, during late hours,” Sanjay Beniwal, Special Commissioner of Police, women safety, airport and modernisation, said this while inaugurating the event, as reported by ET Auto.

The QR system will allow the entire ride to be under scrutiny right after the monitoring device reads the details of the driver and vehicle.

“The Code of Conduct is a must to set the minimum taxi industry protocol and standards of customer service. These are service standards that can be improved upon by licensed operators, drivers and communications networks as they seek to differentiate themselves from other competitors in the commercial passenger vehicle industry. The taxi service industry in a country like India is expected to maintain high standards and provide a high quality of service to the person who hires them," said Trevor Wedge, former Chief, Driver Standards Agency, United Kingdom (UK) while speaking on the occasion.

Dr Rohit Baluja, Director, Institute of Road Traffic Education, added, “Taxi drivers are expected to be professional in their approach to the industry and to drive safely and defensively in all weather and traffic conditions. It is in the interest of owners and operators to provide professional training to all drivers to ensure a high quality of service to all customers.”

With crimes increasing in Delhi, it is a necessity that the Delhi Police keeps reviewing their initiatives to examine if they are working out well or not. Recently, they also held a review meeting of the women's safety tool, Himmat app, that appears to be dwindling due to the low number of downloads by the general public.
