After it was discovered that she was the one telling her spouse to rape occupied Ukrainians as long as he didn't tell her and used protection, Ukrainian authorities launched an investigation. According to reports, Ukraine's Security Service Unit (SSU) conducted the aforementioned pre-trial investigation. According to reports, she could receive a sentence of up to 12 years in prison, so detention was chosen as a preventative measure that could be applied after her arrest.

Roman Bykovsky and Olga Bykovskaya's alleged conversation was captured on audio, which was reportedly made public in April. According to the recording, Bykovskaya, the woman, gives the man permission to rape Ukrainian women while he is serving in Russia's invading forces, as long as he keeps it a secret and uses protection.

On April 12, the startling 30-second video was made public as Ukraine's president, Volodymyr Zelensky, accused Russian troops of committing "hundreds of rapes," including sexual assaults on young children, in his nation.

With the assistance of law enforcement, investigative journalists at Radio Liberty tracked the phone used in the call as soon as it appeared online, with one of the numbers being traced to the Kherson region in April.
The two phone numbers were later discovered to be connected to two accounts on Russia's VKontakte social network, which belonged to Roman Bykovsky, 27, and his wife Olga Bykovskaya, who are both natives of Orel. Later, the detectives used social media to look for Olga's account and discovered that she had moved to the Crimean peninsula, which is now under Russian occupation, in 2018.

Photos of Olga with her husband and their 4-year-old child were posted on her social media accounts. Officials from Radio Liberty also made an attempt to contact the couple using the found numbers.

Roman reportedly responded and denied that he was still in the Kherson region. He reportedly also denied being the man in the audio recording once he realised he was being contacted by reporters. Radio Liberty, however, claimed that his voice matched.

Olga Bykovska also responded and informed Radio Liberty that her husband was receiving medical attention for an injury in Sevastopol. She quickly terminated the call after saying that. She soon deleted her social media accounts.
