Ever since the Taliban de facto took over Afghanistan, following the former president Ashraf Ghani's elopement, concerns regarding women's rights have been raised all over the world. The Taliban, being fundamentalistic, have claimed that the women in the country will be provided rights adhering to Islamic law. They also said that women will be allowed to go to work and access education. However, recent incidents in the country prove otherwise.
In an interview with India Today, Dawran, an Afghan TV journalist shared her experience of going to work a day after the Taliban took over.
When asked about the Taliban spokesperson's confirmation regarding women having their rights, Dawran replied, "After the Taliban took over Kabul, I went to my office the next morning where I was told to not come to work. When I asked what the reason was, they said the rules have now changed and women are not allowed to work in RTA anymore."Dawran was working at the RTA Pashto broadcasting channel in Afghanistan.
She added that she was excited when it was earlier announced that women would be allowed to study and go to work but she faced the opposite."I showed them my identity cards, but still, they asked me to go home."
