Hollywood actress Rooney Mara welcomed a baby boy with fiancé Joaquin Phoenix last month. Reportedly, the couple has christened their son after Phoenix’s late elder brother, actor River Phoenix, who died at the age of 23 due to a drug overdose.
As per US Weekly, Russian filmmaker Victor Kossakovsky announced the news during a question and answer session at the Zurich Film Festival 2020 on Sunday. The filmmaker was answering questions after the screening of his documentary film Gunda which has been executively produced by Phoenix. “He just got a baby, by the way, his name was … a beautiful son called River, so he cannot promote it now,” Kossakovsky revealed when asked about the Joker actor.

Rooney Mara and Joaquin Phoenix Become Parents
Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara first met on the sets of the movie Her in 2013. They later reunited at the shooting of the movie Mary Magdalene in 2016. Mara played the titular role in the movie while Phoenix essayed the part of Jesus. The two started dating each other soon after. They even walked down the red carpet together at the closing ceremony of the Cannes Film Festival in 2017.
Later, Phoenix confirmed in an interview that he was living with Mara in a Hollywood Hills home. Consequently, the couple got engaged in July last year after dating for three years. Media portals reported their pregnancy in May 2020. The couple is yet to confirm the birth of their baby.

Baby Named After Joaquin Phoenix’s Brother
River Phoenix, famous for his roles in movies like Stand By Me, My Own Private Idaho, and Running on Empty died in October 1993. He reportedly experienced a drug overdose at West Hollywood’s Viper Room. The then 19-year-old Joaquin Phoenix was with him at the time and informed the police about the incident.
Joaquin Phoenix has expressed his affection for his late brother, River Phoenix, on various occasions. He also mentioned his brother during his Oscar acceptance speech earlier this year: “When he was 17, my brother wrote this lyric, ‘Run to the rescue with love, and peace will follow’.” Furthermore, Phoenix also spoke about his love for his late brother in an interview with Anderson Cooper in January 2020, “In virtually every movie that I made, there was a connection to River in some way.”
