In A First, Uttarakhand Assembly Gets A Room For Women MLAs

In a bid to empower the female MLAs of Uttarakhand, Ritu Khanduri Bhushan inaugurated a separate room for female MLAs in Dehradun assembly. It didn't have any in the last 22 years since the creation of Uttarakhand. Bhushan is an MLA  from Kotdwar and the current speaker of the assembly.

The separate room for women has a washroom attached to it. There are eight elected women MLAs in the fifth elected assembly, including the Speaker. What compelled her to do so? Bhushan said that she always thought that there should be a room where female MLAs could rest and have food. So, when she came into power she executed the idea. Here is a bit about the Ritu Khanduri Bhushan.

- Born on January 29, 1965, she pursued her graduation from Meerut University’s Raghunath Girls College with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She was the daughter of B.C Khanduri, former Chief Minister of Uttarakhand. She too entered politics by joining BJP in Uttarakhand.

-Rajesh Bhushan, her husband is a government employee.

- Her active participation in her constituency earned her widespread acclaim.

- She also has a significant presence in Yamkeshwar, where she has worked to enhance the constituency during her tenure as an MLA.

- She contested elections for the Uttarakhand Assembly in 2017 from the Yamkehwar (Pauri Garhwal) constituency. She won 8,982 votes and established a strong base in Yamkeshwar and has fought to improve her constituency during her time as an MLA.

-Khanduri Bhushan became Uttarakhand’s first woman speaker this year.  It was also the first time when a woman MLA has been chosen as the Speaker of Assembly since the state's formation.

- She was chosen speaker of the fifth Uttarakhand legislative assembly after being unanimously elected without facing any opposition.

The Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly, commonly known as the Uttarakhand Vidhan Sabha, has a total of 70 members Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLA). Eight women have been elected to the 70-member Uttarakhand legislative assembly, the highest-ever in the electoral of the Himalayan state. Surprisingly, just 45 women ran for election this year, the lowest number in Uttarakhand's history. Women voters, on the other hand, outnumbered men by 4.60 percent this time.
