Ritu Kumar ED Summons: Fashion designers Ritu Kumar, Sabyasachi and Manish Malhotra have been summoned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
According to reports, the ED has summoned the designers in connection with a cash payment made by a Punjab political leader. Media reports stated that the agency might call the designers to Delhi for questioning in the case.
The name of the political leader has not been revealed but the reports state that the ED has filed a case against him under the sections of Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The three designers are top in business with their clothes being worn by famous Bollywood celebrities, notable figures of the country and many people outside the country.
The documents recovered by the ED reportedly show that the said designers had provided the politician with clothes for a wedding ceremony some years ago. The payment of the garments, reported to be in lakhs, was made in cash. The designers have been accused of being in violation of income tax laws of India. According to reports, the ED sources have said that the case of income tax fraud is likely to be registered against the designers and the politician. After the ED is done questioning the personalities, income tax department will carry on with its own investigation of the case.
