Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Rita Bahuguna Joshi's eight-year-old granddaughter died due to burn injuries on Tuesday (November 17). According to an ANI report, on Monday evening she was playing at her grandmother's house at Ponappa road in Allahabad when she suffered burn injuries reportedly from firecrackers. Following which she was rushed to a city hospital in the early hours of Tuesday. Her grandmother Joshi is a politician and Lok Sabha MP from Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.
As per India TV report, her dress caught fire while lighting crackers when she was playing with other children on the terrace of her house. She was admitted to a hospital for treatment and had said to have had scorched about 60 percent. Reportedly, she was critically injured and was to be shifted to Delhi by air ambulance but could not survive. The family is in shock due to death.

Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya said, "The child must have been playing and I have been told she was burnt because of that. We had fixed getting her shifted to Delhi but we did not expect such news. I am shocked and pained at the loss. If people are careful, things will not come to this. But my deepest condolences with the family and one prays for the departed soul."
The eight-year-old succumbed to her injuries at around 2 am on Tuesday. “The child was playing with Diwali’s earthen lamps on the roof with other children in the afternoon when somehow her clothes caught fire. By the time, the elders could rush and douse the flames; she had sustained 60 per cent burns. She was immediately rushed to a private hospital where her treatment began. But she could not be saved,” informed Abhishek Shukla, Joshi’s media coordinator. Reportedly, the child died before she could have been airlifted to Delhi for treatment. Her last rites will be performed at Daraganj Ghat in Prayagraj, Shukla further added.

Joshi, who is a daughter of former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna, joined BJP in 2016. She had served as the chief of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee for five years (2007 to 2012). A former Congress leader, Joshi switched to the BJP ahead of the 2017 UP Assembly elections. She served as a minister in the Yogi Adityanath government before being elected to Lok Sabha in 2019. Reports said that the eight-year-old deceased was her only granddaughter from son Mayank Joshi and his wife Richa Joshi.
