Almaz Ayana of Ethiopia created a new world record in the women's 10,000 meters, clinching her first Olympic gold medal in the process. The 24-year-old raced ahead of all the elite athletes, finishing her race in 29 minutes 17.45 seconds. She broke the 1993 record of 29: 31.78 of China's Wang Junxia by 14 seconds.

Defending champion Tirunesh Dibaba, who incidentally is also from Ethopia managed third spot but in a personal best time of 29:42.56. Kenya's Vivian Cheriot, the 2012 bronze medallist, finished second in 29:32.53, taking silver.Britain's Jo Pavey finished well down in her fifth Olympics at age 42 in a season's best time of 31:33.44

Ethiopian long-distance runner, Ayana competes in the 3000 metres and 5000 metres event. She has previously surprised the world with her performance at the Ethiopian Olympic Trial race in Hengelo in the same event. Ayana has now set her sights on becoming the next dominating long-distance runner and is also aiming for gold in the 5,000 meters next Friday.
