Richa Chadha Debuts as a Producer with Khoon Aali Chithi

Richa Chadha's dream of becoming a producer has finally come true with the release of her short film Khoon Aali Chithi. This 15-minute-long film is an innocent love story set against the backdrop of the turmoil in Punjab in the early 90s.

“I want to encourage young people to come forward and take charge. We have something which the previous generation didn’t - the Internet. There is a huge democracy in that. There is so much scope. Go out there and make your content,” she said while talking about her experience.

Richa added that producing the film was an enriching experience as she got a chance to learn the nuances of cinema when she donned the producer's hat.

She confessed her ardent desire to be a producer soon after she had acted in Gangs Of Wasseypur. She was, however, turned down by a lot of people who dismissed her idea as a pipe dream.

This is not the first time that a Bollywood female actor is trying to expand her ambit by producing films. Priyanka Chopra was recently spotted celebrating the success of her  debut production- Ventilator (Marathi). The movie bagged three Awards at the 64th National Awards. Her second film, Sarvann has also released.

Actor Anushka Sharma, famous for her stellar acting skills in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, produced her first movie NH 10. Interestingly, she was also playing the lead actress in it. The film was a hit at the box office. Phillauri, the second movie that she produced, hit the theatres on 24th March this year, is garnering positive views from the audience.

“I had never thought of venturing into production. But I listen to my inner voice. So when the thought of turning producer took shape in my mind, I knew I had to do it and I just decided to take the plunge. I gave it my 100 per cent. In the future too, if I get an idea about dabbling into any other sphere of film-making, I shall go ahead with it,” she told Asian Age.

In 2011, Lara Dutta produced Chalo Dilli. The movie starred Vinay Pathak and received critical acclaim. Twinkle Khanna, female actor and author, co-produced Thank You with her husband Akshay Kumar in 2011.

It feels quite liberating to see female actors proving their mettle by dabbling in other avenues of their profession. Producing films had remained a male-dominated profession for very long, but kudos to these actresses for stepping in this industry and making way for more women.
