Italian tennis athlete Camila Giorgi, who recently retired and allegedly fled to the USA, is facing accusations of stealing antiques and not paying months of rent. The landlord of her villa in Italy has alleged that she and her family stole valuable furniture and dodged about six months of rent before leaving Italy. On May 7, 2024, Giorgi's name appeared on the International Tennis Integrity Agency's list of retired players amid a series of controversies including alleged tax fraud. Her lawyers vehemently disagree that the retirement was related to the unpaid taxes. Last week, the 32-year-old posted an Instagram story personally announcing her departure from the sport.
Giorgi wrote on Instagram, "To my lovely fans, I am happy to formally announce retirement from my tennis career. I am so grateful for your wonderful love and support for so many years. There have been many inaccurate rumours about my future plans, so I look forward to providing more information about exciting opportunities ahead. With much love, Camila."
Why Has Giorgi Retired?
There has been much mystery surrounding Camila Giorgi's sudden retirement from tennis. Some reports like in The Sun state that the former World No. 26 has fled to the USA to escape Italy's financial police who have called her for questioning. Meanwhile, some other outlets like the Daily Mail UK have reported that she has quit tennis to pursue a career in lingerie modelling.
Amid these debates, Giorgi's landlord in Italy spoke to La Gazzetta dello Sport, accusing the sportswoman of stealing and dodging rent at their villa. Before leaving for the US, Giorgi and her family lived in a rental property in Calenzano, Tuscany. Her landlord alleged, "They made half of our furniture disappear," adding that some of the pieces were valuable antiques.
"We are talking about damage between 50 and 100 thousand euros," the landlord detailed. "I wrote to her that they must at least give us back our things and she responded in a contemptuous way saying that they were objects of little value. A hateful behaviour, for those like me who have suffered economic but also emotional damage."
The landlord refused to comment on the tax fraud allegations. "I can't know how much is true or how much Camila owes the State, but I know what she owes us. Those objects are part of my mother's life and mine: I want them back, at least this much, given that we have lost hope due to the thousands and thousands of euros in back rent."
