In a series of announcements made on July 7, the Gates foundation's chief executive discussed the future possibilities of the Bill and Melinda foundation which was often referred to as their fourth child, following their divorce. One possibility says that Bill Gates can remove Melinda from custody entirely.
Gates foundation Chief Executive Mark Suzman informed in a message to the foundation employees that if after two years either one of them decides that they cannot continue to work together, Melinda will resign as co-chair and trustee.
In that case, Melinda will receive personal resources from Bill for her philanthropic work apart from the foundation’s endowment, he added.
Bill And Melinda Foundation Awaits The Couple's Next Move
As the money at stake involves the concerns of the public, because of its significance in global health, poverty reduction and gender equality among other important areas, any move made by the couple, even after the announcement of their split will affect the interest, according to a report by the New York Times.
Hence, after years of urging by philanthropy experts, it was decided that additional trustees will be made someone outside their close circle, assuring a step toward better functioning.
Ever since the divorce was announced in May 2021, it became a global concern what will be the future of the co-founded trust and how the divorced couple will share control of the foundation. It was clarified on Wednesday that Gates will maintain control as he essentially buys out Melinda's shares out of the foundation. In that case, Suzman assured that Melinda will receive a payout although the exact amount was not revealed.
Bill And Melinda Foundation Restructuring
The restructuring came with the insurance on Wednesday that its mission aims to help and loosen the grip on the reins that its founders have held for more than two decades.
The name of the candidates for the board of trustees and the ultimate number of new trustees are yet to be released. Bill and Melinda are to approve changes to the foundation’s governance structures by the end of the year and the new trustees will be announced in January 2022, added the statement.
