In the new Amul ice cream advertisment, Ratna Pathak Shah steals the show. Seasoned actor that she is, it is imperative for her to bring life to any character she plays. And she does it yet again as she plays the quintessential role of a grandmother preparing for her grandson's homecoming along with Akash Khurana who is playing the grandfather. Both the actors together create magic on-screen.

Amul is known for making humorous advertisements that are homely and have a resonance across the board. This is the first time they have got Shah on-board for their commercials. And it has turned out to be a good choice. Like the typical loving Indian grand-mom, she is preparing dishes according to grandson’s choices and also cross-checking with the granddad if he is all prepared.

She is all prepared whereas the granddad still has business to do like repairing a toy truck. And there lies Amul ice cream in the refrigerator- a favourite of everyone in the family from the grandparents to parents to the son. The grandson’s favourite ice cream wasn’t supposed to be touched by anyone but in the end the mystery unravels that both the grandparents took a scoop out of it.

Shah grabs the focus of the ad with her witty one-liners and sharp expressions. Her salt and pepper look suits her perfectly and makes her look like a modern day grandmother.

Known for her acting chops, Ratna Pathak Shah has always stood out in the limited Bollywood films that she has appeared in. Noticeable have been her roles of a mother in films like Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na,  Golmmaal 3, Khoobsurat and more recently Kapoor and Sons recently where her characters are quirky, refreshing and utterly modern.

Apart from this, in her early days Shah also did a liberal character of Sunita in the comedy show Idhar Udhar. The show was set in Mumbai where two girls Shah, who is an air-hostess and Poonam play by Supriya Kapoor, who is in the advertising industry come together to stay in a paying guest house.  The television series much ahead of its time was carried off very well by both the actors.

But I genuinely feel that Shah, being a great actor who performs very naturally, did not get her due in Bollywood in her early years. She got restricted to doing TV shows, but the ones which did very well like Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai became the means through which the youth of the country actually got to see her regularly and know about her.
