As women empowerment remains high on the central government’s agenda; state governments are taking serious initiatives to do their bit in advancing the status of women in the society as well. One such step is being taken by the Madhya Pradesh government, who will now be issuing Ration cards to the eldest woman of every family, instead of a male member.
This decision was taken by Cabinet at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan in Bhopal. It was also announced that the cards will have a fixed a time limit for issuance and renewal of the document. The cards, currently in the name of male members, will be transferred to senior-most women in the families by a phased method.
According to a report by Post Jagran, Cabinet Spokesman and Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Narottam Mishra, said, "Ration cards will be provided in physical/electronic form to eligible families. They will be issued in the name of senior-most woman member in a family. Senior woman in every family (not below 18 years of age) will be considered as its head and ration card will be issued in her name."
