Chennai Hit & Run

On June 17, Surya was sleeping on a pavement in Besant Nagar, reportedly in an inebriated state, when he was run over by a BMW car. Eyewitnesses said that the driver sped away while a female co-passenger started arguing with the crowd. Surya was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to injuries.

The J-5 Shastri Nagar police found through CCTV footage that the Puducherry-registered car belonged to the BMR (Beeda Masthan Rao) Group. The driver, Rajya Sabha MP's daughter Beeda Madhuri, was arrested but released on bail at the police station on June 18.

A video has surfaced online, showing Madhuri’s friend arguing with locals, claiming they had called an ambulance for Surya. A case was filed under IPC section 304 (a) (causing death by negligence) based on the complaint given by Surya’s wife Vinitha. The accused is the daughter of Beeda Masthan Rao, who became a Rajya Sabha MP in 2022.

Masthan Rao previously served as an MLA and is associated with the BMR Group, a prominent seafood industry name. Reportedly, Beeda Madhuri is also one of the managing partners of the company.

This incident comes weeks after the Pune Porsche accident, when a 17-year-old allegedly drunk driver, the son of a high-profile realtor, allegedly rammed his car into two persons on a bike, killing them on the spot. The case has undergone many shocking turns, exposing the role of influence and privilege in handling legal cases.
