Rachel Morrison: First Woman Cinematographer to bag Oscar Nomination

Cinematographer Rachel Morrison is now on her way to make history. “Black Panther” is one of Morrison’s recent works and she breaks the record for her historic Oscar nomination.

She bagged the honour of the first Oscar nomination for a female cinematographer for the poetic beauty of “Mudbound.” If that’s not all, she now has shot the magnum opus, Black Panther, starring Chadwick Boseman which is gaining credibility for its opulent-looking setup. It is also praised as the first African-American superhero movie.

If reports are to be believed, this significant Marvel movie has had impacted on Morrison’s Oscar run.

Morrison, 39, is the first female cinematographer nominated for an Oscar. She also came out openly about her identity as lesbian, making two historic firsts.

“I think I would literally go into hiding and not come out until after the Oscars if I could,” said Morrison in an interview. “It took me a little bit to sort of let really sink in. But it does seem to make a difference. So many women find this inspiring, and is telling a lot of women that they can keep it up, that there is hope at the end of the tunnel,” the Vanity Fair reported.

Interestingly, Morrison’s extremely challenging work on Marvel’s Black Panther has been recognized as “most significant movie since Iron Man.”

While we all cheer for her nomination, another fact that needs to be highlighted is the gender gap or inequalities in various sides of the industry. According to Los Angeles Time, in 2016, only 5 percent of the women cinematographers made it on the top 250 domestic-grossing films that year.

“Women are so qualified they should just go for it. It’s not just about cinematography, it about believing in yourself and that anything’s possible,” Morrison told The Hollywood Reporter Tuesday morning after the nominations were announced.

“I tried not to get caught up in the gender and equity of it all and focus on the work,” Morrison said. “I also looked at it as a positive. I would always stand out in the crowd. I chose to focus on all the things that made it good to be a woman.”

Morrison will compete against legends as Roger Deakins (Blade Runner 2049) and Hoyte van Hoytema (Dunkirk).

Morrison collaborated with director Ryan Coogler for the second time for Black Panther after 2013’s Fruitvale Station.
