Queen Elizabeth II marks Prince Philip 100th birthday: Queen Elizabeth II marked her late husband Prince Philip's 100th birthday by planting a new rose named after him on Thursday (June 10, 2021).
Last week, the monarch watched the Duke of Edinburgh Rose planted in the Windsor Castle gardens to commemorate Prince Philip's centenary birth anniversary. The queen was photographed as she accepted the rose bush from the President of the Royal Horticulture Society's President. The rose is deep pink and is dappled with white lines. It was newly bred following the prince's death on April 9, 2021.
For every rose that is sold, the company 'Harkness Roses' will donate 2.50 pounds to a fund that aims at helping a million more young people from different backgrounds to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh's Awards. It is a popular youth award program that Prince Philip started in 1956.
Prince Philip was born on the Greek Island of Corfu on June 10, 1921. He married the then Princess, Elizabeth, in the year 1947. Five years later, at the age of 25, she became the queen. Their marriage lasted for a period of 73 years. This made Prince Philip Britain's longest-serving Royal consort. The queen has referred to her husband as her "strength and stay" in public.
The prince devoted his life to the royal service, undertaking several engagements. He also accompanied the queen on her official visits to about 140 countries. He retired from his Royal duties at the age of 96 in 2017.
