World no 2 PV Sindhu is gearing up for another feat. She is among the elite nine badminton players vying for a position in the four slots reserved in the Badminton World Federation Athletes' Commission.
It all started when an online petition in May 2016 began campaigning to acknowledge the star players. It urged the BWF to consider greater autonomy to independent players by allowing them to register directly for international tournaments rather than doing the registration through their member associations.
According to the same, BWF finished nominating six men and three women standing for the BWF Athletes' Commission elections on March 27.

Besides the Olympic Silver Medallist Sindhu, the list also comprises two former world No 1s in men's doubles and a former European men's singles, and another Indian male shuttler called Nikhar Garg. Those who are nominated will stand for election to the body which represents players within the Badminton World Federation.
Of the nominees, only three persons will be elected to take up the job of the outgoing members -- Yuhan Tan (Belgium), Hans-Kristian Solberg Vittinghus (Denmark) and Greysia Polii (Indonesia) -- who will complete their four-year term in May.
According to the rule, at least one male and one female player must be elected. The third person (male or female) can be elected based on the next highest number of votes. Additionally, a fourth person -- a female -- will be elected to finish the term of Tang Yuanting.
Yuanting, a Chinese player, who was elected a member of the Athletes' Commission in 2015, had resigned from her duty and taken retirement from badminton last year, thus creating a vacancy in the commission.
