India's ace badminton player PV Sindhu is a front-runner to be selected as one of the two flag-bearers for the Indian contingent at the Tokyo Olympics 2020.
This year’s Olympics scheduled to commence in July will have one male and female athlete as the flag bearer at the opening ceremony. The Rio Games silver medallist is being considered for the latter role.
Although the official announcement will be made at the end of this month, as per reports, it is almost certain that the star badminton player PV Sindhu will be one of the flag-bearers.
"Sindhu is likely to be one of the flag-bearers," an IOA source told PTI.
There is no strict rule but as per convention the last edition's medal winner perpetually has been the flag-bearer for the next edition.
However, wrestler Sakshi Malik, who was among one of the two medallists from the last edition, has not qualified during this edition.
On the other hand, there is no confirmation about who among the male athletes will be the joint flag-bearer. To name a few, the popular athletes being considered are Neeraj Chopra, TT player Sharath Kamal, wrestler Bajrang Punia, boxer Amit Panghal.
The Tokyo Olympic games are scheduled to take place between July 23 and August 8.
Sindhu, India's lone women's singles badminton player to qualify for the Olympics is one of India's biggest medal hopes. Unlike 2016, this time, all the focus will be on the female shuttler.
When asked if she feels any added pressure as she leads India's campaign in badminton, the 25-year-old acknowledged that "the expectations are a lot more, the responsibilities are a lot more".
"Back then in 2016, it was the first time, it was a different atmosphere. I didn't know how it was going to be,” she said.
